What Are the Five Critical Reading Skills?

First, put the author’s central point into your own words, then separate it from examples, background information, and opinions that appear along the way. If you cannot state the claim clearly, pause before judging it; a vague conclusion is difficult to evaluate, especially when an article covers several related ideas.

Look at what supports the claim: specific examples, data, named sources, or a clear explanation are more useful than confident wording alone. Ask whether the evidence directly supports the point being made, and notice when a broad claim rests on just one example or a source you cannot identify.

Critical Reading Bundle for AI Content | How to Read and Evaluate AI-Generated Content
An assumption is something a writer treats as true without establishing it, while bias can shape which details receive attention or get left out. You can test both by asking whose perspective is represented, what conditions would need to be true for the argument to work, and whether another reasonable interpretation has been overlooked.
Follow the path from evidence to conclusion and ask whether each step makes sense, rather than accepting a conclusion because the writing is smooth. Watch for leaps such as treating correlation as proof of cause, presenting two choices when more exist, or applying a narrow example to every situation.
Check the product’s listed specifications when evaluating 4. evaluate the reasoning.
Decide what the text establishes, what remains uncertain, and whether you need another source before acting on it. This skill matters when reading AI-generated content, which may be fluent without giving you enough support to rely on a claim; our guide to critically reading AI content offers a related starting point alongside our Critical Reading Bundle for AI Content.
Our team suggests practicing the five skills in order on a short article: write down its claim, mark its support, question its assumptions, trace its logic, and state your conclusion. As you gain confidence, you can use the same approach when comparing advice, reading news, or deciding whether an AI-generated answer deserves a closer look.
